Overdue Fines Will Be Collected
Manukau City Council intends to pursue collection of overdue parking fines totalling $6.5 million, many of which date
back some years.
There is a number of reasons for the large amount of unpaid fines, including recently-revealed glitches in the
administrative process between the Ministry for Courts and the Council, and an increasing reluctance among some members
of the public to pay fines.
Many drivers who have received an infringement notice on their vehicle some time ago may not yet have received a request
for payment, and may not be aware they have fines to pay.
However the Council’s Director of City Services, Wayne Goodley, says the process of fine collection has now been
improved and the errors in the process have now been identified. “The fines definitely will be collected.”
“Vehicle owners who’ve been given parking tickets can expect to receive notification through the mail soon. If a driver
thinks a fine has been dropped or gone away simply because they haven’t heard about it for a while, that’s not the
case.”
Manukau City Council issues 40,000 infringement notices each year for parking or related offences.
Mr Goodley says a number of easy-pay options are available. The Council has introduced new payment methods including
allowing extended time for payments to be made, and people may also pay through any NZ Post Shop or Books and More
outlets.
