Auckland City to start construction on Matiatia ferry passenger terminal upgrade
Auckland City Council has accepted Robert Cunningham Construction Ltd’s $3 million tender to build Waiheke Island’s
Matiatia ferry passenger building.
The council will start work to upgrade the terminal in June 2003 to provide better facilities and comfort for
passengers.
“Matiatia wharf is a key transport link between Auckland and Waiheke Island,” says Councillor Greg McKeown, Transport
Committee chairperson. “The new terminal building has been designed to manage both residents’ and tourists’ needs. We
are really pleased to start this construction and will minimise as much as possible any inconvenience for passengers. It
is another step forward for passenger transport.”
The upgraded terminal will include: large covered waiting areas (inside and outside) for passengers and those waiting to
welcome people full cover from the road to the ferries upgraded ticketing amenities and concession opportunities public
toilets coast guard and first aid rooms freight handling facilities.
Hauraki Gulf Islands Ward Councillor Faye Storer is excited about the project as its realisation means better conditions
and services for Waiheke Island’s growing population and increasing number of visitors, especially during the winter
months.
During construction, a temporary ticket office and shelter will be provided at the end of the wharf.
Work should be finished by the end of December 2003.
