El Rincon del Ensueño
Colombian artist and sculptress, Martha Meyer, will open her new creation on May 30th In the Bay of Islands.
Three years in the making, Martha's sculpture is sited in the grounds of Paihia Primary School.
Martha describes the vividness of children's dreams, the curvaceous spaces and lavishly bright colours of "El Rincon del Ensueño" ( the children's corner of dreams) and envisages it as a place of creation for children and those young at heart.
The sculpture is a spatial, interactive structure, which incorporates Martha's roots in the Andes of South America. It takes the form of an amphitheatre and encapsulates a voyage from the Precolumbian Incas, through to the artists of the 20th century and beyond. Amongst those whose work has provided inspiration, are the artists Antonio Gaudi, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Hundertwasser, Joan Dubuffet, Henri Matisse, Gustav Klimt and the children of Paihia Primary School.
Additionally, there have been contributions from several Northland artists but, above all, it is a tribute to the purity, candour, innocence and creativity of children everywhere.
There will be a Karakia held at the school around 9.00am with the official opening at the school at 5.00pm
