Auckland City Council exceeds power savings target
Auckland City Council’s Works Committee yesterday heard that the council’s power savings across its major buildings and facilities have hit 14 per cent, exceeding the council’s initial target of 10 per cent.
Power savings across all council activities, including feature lighting of council buildings and landmarks, have hit six per cent, close to the national daily average.
The 14 per cent savings are being made at the Civic Building, Bledisloe Building, Graham Street, Art Gallery, Central Library and the Zoo.
“Clearly, if we all play our part, achieving the overall savings target is quite doable. The Works Committee will continue to monitor the overall electricity situation, and savings at council properties in particular,” says Councillor Bill Christian, Works Committee chairperson.
Measures have included decommissioning one lift in each administration building and reducing operating hours and temperatures of air conditioning. The measures were introduced on May 12.
“Staff are also playing their part by turning off equipment during down times at work and overnight, and saving on lighting,” says Des Hughes, Auckland City’s manager utility relationship.
