Youth council welcomes 15 new members
The Auckland City Youth Council welcomed 15 new members at its meeting yesterday evening, bringing its total membership
to 24.
The youth council was set up in 1984 to represent young people and give them a voice when issues of concern to young
Aucklanders are being discussed. It comprises of young people aged between 12 and 25 years with youth councillors
representing the schools, tertiary institutions, and community groups from around Auckland.
The new members were recruited following an extensive promotional campaign targeting community, youth and religious
groups, training providers, schools, community centres and local iwi.
All interested young people were required to attend a three and a half day training course. Topics included marketing,
speaking to the media, awareness of disability issues and communication with youth.
Councillor Graeme Mulholland, chairperson of Auckland City’s Community Services Committee, says additional training will
be held later in the year. It is crucial that youth councillor members have the communication and networking skills
necessary to represent Auckland’s youth population.
“Young people make up 22 per cent of the city’s population. It is important they realise that the youth council is there
for them to join or to act as their voice,” he says.
The youth council meets on the third Monday of each month at 4.30pm. The venue is the committee room, level 15,
Auckland City Civic Building, 1 Greys Avenue, Auckland Central.
