Make it click
‘Make it click’ was the call from both Police and Plunket in a restraints campaign leading up to Easter.
262 vehicles were stopped and 26 offence notices were issued to drivers not wearing seatbelts, while three offence notices were issued to drivers’ of children under eight years of age.
“It’s not enough to just give out a verbal warning anymore, people should know that it’s against the law to not wear a seatbelt and that they will be fined if caught.” says Lower Hutt Traffic Sergeant Stan Woolf.
During the campaign people who were safely restrained were given ‘Make it Click’ stickers from McDonalds, free passes from Swim City, HOYTS and Lollipops Playland and went into the draw to win one of two booster seats donated by Britax Childcare products.
Karolyn Messer (see photo attached) and Clare Archer both from Wainuiomata were the lucky winners of the booster seats.
In the 12 months to March 2003, 81 people were killed not wearing seatbelts. At least 42 of those lives would have been saved had they used the seatbelts available to them, according to the attending officers. (L.T.S.A. ‘Road Safety Progress’ magazine, March 2003 edition)
Infant, child and booster seats can be hired from the Plunket Car Seat rental scheme based on the ground floor of the Community Health Building at Hutt Hospital. Their hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10am-1pm; Tuesday 12-3pm; Thursday 5:30-7:30pm. For more information please phone 566 9004.
