Aucklanders' feedback sought on
footpath renewal project
Auckland City is currently preparing a new policy to solve its current backlog of footpath maintenance and improve
footpaths throughout the city.
Part of the policy considers the materials to be used to make the footpath and the council is giving ratepayers and
residents an opportunity to give their feedback.
Feedback will be reported to the Transport Committee and be considered in conjunction with recommended footpath
materials from the draft footpath policy.
Some $20 million will be spent over the next two years renewing footpaths. The budget is based on using ordinary cement
concrete, the cheapest option. Should any other option be adopted, it will mean fewer footpath replacements or a higher
budget.
Nine material samples are being reviewed:
- ordinary concrete
- oxide concrete
- black pebble concrete
- red chip concrete
- black asphalt
- red slurry asphalt
- asphalt with red chip
- clay and concrete pavers
- stone pavers.
These materials have been laid on a vacant site at the intersection of Sandringham and Balmoral Roads. Each sample shows
the total cost of constructing and maintaining that material over 50 years.
Feedback is invited onsite where our team is present from 10:30am to 3:30pm every day, on
www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/footpathproject where comments can be submitted online, or by calling our call centre, ph (09)
379 2020, which will mail a feedback form. Comments on the trial close Friday, 25 April 2003.
The new footpath policy is due to be adopted in July 2003.
