Detour Allows For Cycle Race
State Highway 1 - on the Kamo Bypass just north of Whangarei - will be closed to traffic from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 16
March 2003 to accommodate the finish area of the four-day Twin Coast Mizone Cycle Challenge.
During this time a detour, which will be signposted, will operate along Kamo Road between the roundabout at the southern
end of the bypass until Kamo Road rejoins State Highway1 at the northern end.
Transit New Zealand Area Engineer, Richard Green, says using the Kamo Bypass for the finish of the cycle race will be
safer for both participants and spectators. “It will allow better spectator access and will do away with the need to
travel through a series of traffic signals in Whangarei which will make it safer for the cyclists,” he says.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the detour may cause to road users but we are also sure that they will
support the decision to use the bypass for the finish of what promises to be an exciting and well attended event,” says
Mr Green.
