$450,000 in berm mowing savings diverted to parks and recreation improvements
Auckland City Council has decided to continue with its policy to mow street berms 12 times a year and to align itself
more closely with most other local authorities around the country. A motion to increase the frequency of berm mowing was
defeated at last week’s council meeting.
The berm is the grass verge located at the front of properties, parks and industrial areas.
Within council boundaries they are maintained by Auckland City and mowed twelve times a year at a cost of $550, 000.
Auckland City’s Recreation and Events Committee chairperson, Councillor Scott Milne, expresses a huge thank you to all
Aucklanders who have taken it upon themselves to mow the berms in front of their homes.
People who live in Auckland are very proud of their city and council has been able to divert $450,000 from berm mowing
to the upkeep of parks and recreation spaces, Councillor Milne said.
Even though Auckland City mows more frequently than neighbouring cities, council officers and mowing contractors are
working towards improving the service in the high growth wet season between October and January.
