E-Awards – call for entries
20 February 2003
The Auckland Regional Council is again searching for individuals and groups that may be eligible to enter the 2003
Environment Awards (E Awards).
The ARC aims to recognise and celebrate positive environmental contributions to our region.
“The role of the ARC is to protect the natural assets of the Auckland region,” said Brian Smith, Chair of the ARC’s
Environmental Management Committee.
“The success of campaigns such as the Big Clean Up, which has seen more than 40,000 households sign up, identifies a
desire by Auckland residents to be pro-active in protecting their natural environment. The E-Awards recognise groups,
businesses or individuals who have been active in making significant differences to their local or regional
environment.”
The categories of entry have been changed this year to reflect the responsibilities of the ARC and the environmental
issues faced by the region.
The categories are: Caring for our Air; Caring for our Water; Caring for our Land and Biodiversity; Caring for our
Coast; and Caring for our Culture and Historical Heritage.
Past winners include Te Henga/ Bethells Beach Care group, Maraetai School, Waitakere City Council’s Green Network and
The Eco Store in Freemans Bay.
“There is a real need to recognise the huge amount of positive environmental work that is being done by many individuals
and groups,” said Cr Smith. “The E-Awards allow us to recognise the work of these people and also to raise awareness
across the region of specific environmental issues.”
E-Award entries close on Friday 4th April, with winners being announced on World Environment Day, Thursday 5th June.
Entry forms are available online at www.arc.govt.nz or by calling the Auckland Regional Council on 366 2000 or for those
outside the free calling area - 0800 80 60 40.
