Calling All 8-10 Years - The Great Manukau Mountain Bike Muster
Injury Free Counties Manukau have put out a call to all 8 to 10 year olds to come and learn new skills at the Manukau
Mountain Bike Muster. The event is being held as part of National Bike Week in order to increase cycle skills and 8 to
10 years have been targeted, as there are few places or resources for children this age where they can learn in a safe
environment. Children are at high risk at this age if riding on our busy roads. The event which will take place between
6 - 8.30 pm on Tuesday 18 February at Hayman Park, Lambie Drive, Manukau City,
The aim is to give the participants a chance to learn more about braking, changing gears, riding down hills, helmet
wearing and the law, all of which are aimed at increasing the children's confidence. A mountain bike trail of
approximately 1.5 kilometres will provide the children with an off road circuit.
Isy Kennedy from Injury Free Counties-Manukau says, " We have arranged assistance from a number of high profile
well-experienced senior mountain bikers who will lead small groups of 6 - 8 children and provide expert instruction.
There may even be time to squeeze in a few races as well. The Police will be there to discuss cycle safety and the law.
Demonstrations and lessons will also take place at the skateboard bowl at the Park and the St John's Ambulance will be
in attendance as well".
Each entrant will receive a free Milo drink, sausages and other goodies and will go into the draw for spot prizes, the
major prize being a bike valued at over $400.
The emphasis is on safe cycling, all riders must wear a cycle helmet and children are encouraged to have a free helmet
and bike check at Cycle City at 45 Cavendish Road prior to the event. There will also be pre-event checks on the night
starting at 4 p.m.
