Mayor makes long descent for Loyal banner
Auckland Mayor John Banks today abseilled down the 70-metre Civic Administration Building in Aotea Square to unfurl a
gigantic Loyal banner in support of Team New Zealand’s defence of the America’s Cup.
Without a doubt Mr Banks’ descent, accompanied by abseiling professionals Network Visuals, marks the first time a Mayor
of Auckland City has externally scaled the Council’s main administration tower.
“On the eve of our national day, I took up a harness to highlight that February 2003 is a time like no other. Auckland
is 100 per cent loyal and in support of the black boat. Unfurling the 45-square metre banner highlights the City’s
commitment and its pride for Team New Zealand.”
A Loyal flag will also fly from the Auckland Town Hall’s clock tower.
“The America’s Cup adds an immeasurable amount of heart and soul to our city. Auckland is proud to fly the banner and
flag over the central city as it is our way of saying thank you and good luck to Team New Zealand,” Mr Banks said.
FOOTNOTE: The Auckland City Council’s Civic Administration Building is widely celebrated as one of Auckland’s first high
rise buildings. Opened in 1966, it is today the workplace for 496 council employees.
