Kids Step Back To School
Manukau City Council is asking drivers to be extra vigilant over the next week as kids across the city gear up to go
Back to School.
The annual Back to School campaign is a reminder to motorists that kids should feel safe when getting to and from
school.
“Children will be out on the footpaths in force, and we’re asking drivers to be aware and do their part to ensure that
children return Back To School safely. That means keeping your eyes open and your speed down, and paying very close
attention to pedestrian crossings and areas around schools,” said Manukau City Council Road Safety Schools Co-ordinator
Kathy Williams.
“We all know kids can be unpredictable. The best way to guard against tragedy is to keep your speed down and your
attention focused. Watch out for school patrols, follow their directions and be patient,” said Ms Williams.
“Motorists should not just alter their behaviour outside schools, but should be alert to safety issues at all times.
Children are often impetuous, and though the message to them is to cross at marked crossings and to watch closely for
oncoming traffic, motorists too have an obligation to take care and to be prepared to stop at all times.”
