Exercise important for strong healthy preschoolers
Preschoolers love being busy - bouncing, running, swinging, sliding. Research shows that it is a crucial time of life for developing physical skills, imagination and confidence. As well as helping to improve these skills in everyday activities, Christchurch parents can join their children in a range of semi-structured classes designed to stimulate preschoolers’ minds and bodies. Being active from an early age helps children develop a strong healthy body for the future.
Preschool gym classes are an ideal way to help build a child’s confidence and self esteem through physical activity. They are also a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to explore and play together. Co-ordination, balance and rhythm can all be improved through gymnastic based activities. Classes focus on running, jumping, climbing and balancing using balls, colour, music and equipment such as beams, tunnels and trampolines. Group activities help children learn important social skills. Term 1 classes begin the week of 3 February at Pioneer Leisure Centre and Cowles Stadium. Eight weeks for $36. Telephone 941 6840.
Swimsmart, a learn to swim programme for babies aged six months and older is another fun activity for parents and children. The Parent and Child classes are a series of group lessons with parents/caregivers helping their babies develop confidence in the water with songs, games and movement. Children are able to progress into the preschooler lessons. With two children per class, they are introduced to different swimming strokes at their own pace. Term 1 classes begin at QEII Park, the week of 27 January and at Centennial and Pioneer Leisure Centres, the week of 3 February. Telephone 941 6840.
