Summer recycling at the beaches

Summer recycling at the beaches
Recycling facilities will be available at Kairaki, Waikuku and Woodend Beaches from 27 December until the end of January if the weather holds.
Real Recycling, the group consisting of Christchurch City Council, Recovered Materials Foundation, Onyx and Waimakariri District Council, which provides the residential recycling collection, has arranged for large recycling containers to be placed at these popular northern beaches.
The large bottle-bank style containers have openings for glass, plastic, cans and newspaper to be deposited inside. "Last year, these large recycling containers were trialled at the three beach areas and we got a good response. They were in place for about four weeks, and were emptied twice during that time - that's a lot of recycling! Also the contents were generally clean, which is something we would like to encourage. It's the same recycling that people in Christchurch City and Waimakariri District do at home, it's just at the beach," says Kitty Waghorn, Solid Waste Asset Engineer for Waimakariri District Council.
It is hoped that holidaymakers and picnickers at Kairaki, Waikuku and Woodend Beaches will make use of the recycling containers to reduce the amount of recyclable materials going into the litter bins - and so help reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill. Residents, both permanent and temporary, are asked to keep using the kerbside recycling and refuse collection service over the holiday period.
Closer to home During the summer holidays, the times that the Onyx trucks come to collect refuse and recycling may change from week to week, as their speed generally depends on the number of crates and bags put out for collection. So to be sure of collection, crates and rubbish bags need to be out by 7.30am in Christchurch and 8:00 am in the Waimakariri District.
If the public has any enquiries regarding the above they can contact the City Council on 941 8830.
