Dust storm from oxidation pond dampened down
Dust clouds have caused some concern in Bromley this week as the Council excavates sand from the bottom of the No 1
oxidation pond as part of the next stage of the Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. Strong nor’west winds whipped sand
away from the excavation on Wednesday, causing a dust storm across Dyers Road.
The council contractor, who was not working at the site that day, has now got most of the dust under control by allowing
water into the pond in areas where excavation has been completed. A potential dust problem from the stockpile area has
been averted by covering the stockpile with topsoil as they go.
Mike Bourke, the City Water and Wastes Operations Manager, said it was pleasing that the contractor responded
immediately to the issue on Wednesday, but with a 40 hectare work site it will be a challenge in strong winds to keep
the situation totally under control.
Due to the good drying conditions, work on the No 1 oxidation pond is progressing ahead of schedule and the major
excavation work is expected to be completed in February.
