Waterfront Redevelopment Must Benefit Everyone
Speaking after an Auckland Waterfront Advisory group ‘one year on’ presentation of its proposals to redevelop the
western reclamation, Auckland Mayor John Banks today emphasised the importance of ensuring all waterfront stakeholders
are fully consulted and involved.
“This project is about city pride, the future character of Auckland and its unparalleled waterfront. This is an
opportunity for best urban design and architectural excellence. At the same time it must be a mixed development,
reflecting the heart and soul of the area,” he said.
"Auckland was founded as a port city. Access to the waterfront and Auckland's prosperity had been built up over the
years through the development of marine, fishing and other vital industries including tourism and restaurants in the
area.
"In moving forward, we must ensure the needs of all stakeholder groups are fully worked through. I share the driving
vision to ‘make a place in which working port and civic waterfront activities can co-exist and flourish’.
“The 30-hectare western reclamation between Hobson Wharf and the Harbour Bridge sits on one of the most beautiful
harbours in the world. This is a great opportunity for the city to make the most of this gateway real estate. We won’t
get a second chance.
“I am committed to doing it once and doing it right.”
Mr Banks said the AWAG team must continue to consult and ensure the needs of key stakeholders area are identified and
incorporated in the master plan to be brought to the Auckland City Council around March 2003.
