ARC asks Transit to reconsider decision on viaduct widening
ARC's Strategic Policy Committee today reaffirmed its preference for the Tunnel option on Transit New Zealand's Harbour Bridge to City project (HBTC).
Transit announced on November 13th that their preferred option for the project was to widen the existing viaduct through Victoria Park, along its western flank.
At the ARC Strategic Policy Committee meeting today concern was expressed that the region's long term community and economic goals were not being met. The ARC wants the cost to the community and environment to be considered alongside construction costs.
Committee Chair Ian Bradley said the ARC would urgently convene a workshop with the other agencies involved to make sure that the final solution adopted fits the regional vision, not just short term budgets.
Councillor Bradley acknowledged that funding was an issue but said "People's expectations have changed and it will not do to just build a road through the area without consideration of wider effects.
Imagine the benefits which would accrue to the city and the region if the overhead viaduct was removed altogether. This area is currently being redeveloped as a place for people to enjoy and the tunnel option would contribute greatly to this. In looking at construction costs we need to look at all of the funding options and come to the best long term decision.”
