Peace Awards ceremony
The efforts of local peace campaigners are to be recognised at a Christchurch City Council awards ceremony at Our City,
next Tuesday.
Mayor Garry Moore is to present eight pieces of carved greenstone/pounamu to key groups and individuals, many of whom
have been working for peace for the last 20-30 years.
The media is invited to attend this event at Our City, cnr Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Tce at 5.30pm on Tuesday,
December 3. Presentations will start promptly at 5.30pm.
The inaugural awards are being presented in celebration of Christchurch becoming an official Peace City, this year.
Maori carver Rikki Manuel sketched the design for the greenstone/pounamu award, which symbolises peace.
Names of award recipients are not being released until after the ceremony. Most prominent members of the local peace
movement will be at the presentation and recipients won’t know they are to receive an award until the night.
