Great clean up by North Shore residents
North Shore residents led the way over the rest of the country when more than 8,000 locals took part in this year's
Clean Up NZ Week in September.
Participation figures recently distributed by the Clean Up New Zealand Trust showed that North Shore City had more
participants than any other region in New Zealand. All over the North Shore, people took part in litter cleanups, stream
cleanups, weeding, school waste audits and more.
There were a number of special events during Clean Up NZ Week, including a fun Eco-walk along the coast from Narrow Neck
to Takapuna beach organised by community co-ordinators Pam Chapman of Devonport and Carole Murray of Takapuna. Well over
1,000 people took part in the beach walk, collecting more than 150 bags of rubbish.
Works and environment committee chairperson, Joel Cayford, says the effort made by people in North Shore City was
outstanding.
"The council does its best to keep our city clean, but ultimately everyone has a responsibility to help preserve the
environment so it's great to see so many people getting involved," Councillor Cayford says.
North Shore City Council's Clean Up NZ Week co-ordinator, Sarah Yarrow, says she would like to send a big thank you to
everyone who participated in Clean Up NZ.
"I would like to congratulate everyone involved for getting out and making a difference for our environment - this is a
great achievement," Ms Yarrow says.
