Len Lye's friends & colleagues feature in lecture series
Dame Cheryll Sotheran is among the list of special guest speakers in a series of early evening lectures entitled Len
Lye*The Business of Energy & A Feeling of Zizz, focussing on the life and work of New Zealand artist Len Lye. Also presenting talks are the artist's
biographer Roger Horrocks and John Matthews, Chair of the Len Lye Foundation, both of whom worked with Len Lye during
his lifetime. Frank Stark, Chief Executive of the NZ Film Archive, is the fourth speaker.
The lecture series coincides with the popular Len Lye exhibition presented by Telecom on show at City Gallery
Wellington, and is part of a programme of public events running until the end of the exhibition on 24 November. The
lecture series is presented in partnership with Continuing Education, Victoria University of Wellington.
Who Was Len Lye? Tuesday 29 October, 6pm Roger Horrocks, Head of the
Department of Film, Television and Media Studies at the University of Auckland, is the author of the recent biography
Len Lye (AUP, 2001). He will consider Lye in personal terms*how a tough kid from an unlikely background became New
Zealand's most radical artist in the 1920s*and in artistic terms: what makes Lye's 'art of movement' original.
Len Lye: Pioneering Filmmaker Monday 4 November, 6pm Frank Stark, Chief Executive of the New
Zealand Film Archive, discusses the archiving and restoration of Len Lye's pioneering film work, and the 2001
collaboration between the New Zealand Film Archive and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to restore the 1957 film All
Souls Carnival.
Len Lye and New Zealand Art Monday 11 November, 6pm Dame Cheryll Sotheran, former CEO of Te
Papa and former Director of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, talks about her experiences managing the Len Lye
collection, working with the Len Lye Foundation, and the place Len Lye holds in modern and contemporary New Zealand art.
Len Lye: Perpetual Motion Monday 18 November, 6pm John Matthews, Lye's long time
friend and Chair of the Len Lye Foundation, shares his experiences of working with Lye, and discusses the work of the
Foundation in bringing to life the artist's vision of composing motion following Lye's death in 1980.
