ARC supports Long Bay funding initiative
The Auckland Regional Council today confirmed its support for a funding initiative which could lead to the purchase of
more land at Long Bay Regional Park.
The support came at a meeting of the ARC’s Parks and Heritage Committee which received a 57,000-signature petition
calling for the council and other agencies to “protect the Long Bay–Okura peninsula from urban sprawl by creating a
Great Park…”
The committee also resolved to support the efforts of North Shore City Council and the Great Park Society in seeking
alternative funds for acquiring additional land at Long Bay Regional Park.
Committee Chairman Bill Burrill says the ARC is offering more than just moral support.
“We have also agreed to match North Shore City’s effort and put up $3000 towards acquiring information from local and
overseas people with experience and expertise in innovative methods for funding land acquisition,” Cr Burrill says.
“We have always supported the concept of a Great Park but funding is the big roadblock. This initiative is potentially a
big step forward for all parties.”
Both the Auckland Regional Council and North Shore City Council are currently in the final stages of purchasing land at
Long Bay Regional Park.
Today’s decision has no effect on their agreements with LandCo Holdings for the purchase that land, the price of which
is being determined by arbitration.
