Family fun at Halswell Quarry Park, this Sunday
Pack a picnic hamper and come to the Halswell Quarry Park open day, this Sunday, October 13.
The Friends of the Halswell Quarry Park are inviting everyone to bring their families for an afternoon of fun and entertainment in the Garden City’s latest treasure.
The Halswell Quarry Park, a Christchurch City Council millennium project, covers 55 hectares at Halswell’s old quarry site. Twenty hectares of the Park contains six Sister Cities Gardens, which feature plants native to their regions. Christchurch’s Sister Cities are Adelaide, Australia; Christchurch, England; Gansu Province, China; Kurashiki, Japan; Seattle, U.S.A.; and Songpa-Gu, Seoul, Korea. During this Sunday’s open day, there will be people at each Sister City Garden to talk about current and future projects.
People are invited to come as early as they like to the Park and make a day of it. Entertainment will begin at the actual site of the former quarry around 2pm, with a 30 minute performance by the men’s barbershop chorus, the Canterbury Plainsmen. This will be followed by a Civil Defence high angle rescue team, giving a display down the face of the quarry. The Plainsmen will then sing again for 30 minutes.
The Park has picnic facilities, interesting walks, wonderful views and ample car parking. Come along, have a picnic, enjoy the music and experience the wonderful Halswell Quarry Park. Council Rangers and The Friends of Halswell Quarry Park will be there to answer questions.
Access to The Halswell Quarry Park is off Kennedy’s Bush Road, and is signposted from Halswell Road.
