Karangahape Road licensees asked to come to the party
Karangahape Road businesses and residents, concerned over the rising level of violent alcohol related behaviour, are
asking licensees in the area to join them in their battle to clean up the streets.
Yesterday afternoon the first meeting of the Karangahape Road Alcohol Accord was held. The first item on the agenda was
getting buy-in from all the area’s participants, especially the area’s licensees.
As the Accord’s new interim chair, Staircase Night-club’s general manager Gray Thomas Tinley says, “the Viaduct Alcohol
Accord has done a great job at reducing alcohol related incidents down at the Viaduct Harbour. This accord is hopeful of
similar positive results for K’ Road area.”
Street cameras, an extension of the inner city alcohol ban and a higher police presence were actions discussed by the
meeting as possible strategies that could be enforced.
The police, the Auckland City Council and Safer Auckland City support the Karangahape Road Alcohol Accord.
Councillor Noelene Raffills, chair of the Council’s Law and Order Committee, says the establishment of community alcohol
accords is part of the council’s wider strategy to make the city a safer and more enjoyable place.
