Lloyd Elsmore Pool closure
Work on Manukau City Council’s Lloyd Elsmore Pool extension means the pool will be closed from 19 October until June
2003.
“Because the amount of work needed is major, we need to close the existing pool to ensure the safety of our customers
and our staff. The last day people can use the pool is Friday 18 October 2002. We are aiming to reopen the pool for
general users in early June 2003,” says Centre Manager, Michael Groom.
Part of the project also includes the relocation of the childcare centre. It will close from 18 October (last day of
use), and reopen in mid March 2003. Parents who currently use the centre regularly will be kept informed of the
reopening date by mail.
“Our fitness centre members will be pleased to hear that we will be effectively doubling the space of the gym. While we
do this, the fitness centre will be relocated downstairs while the work is progressing. Works are timetabled to begin on
21 October, and the new gym will reopen upstairs in mid March 2003,” Mr Groom says.
“We are very excited about the improvements to our facility. The $6.8 million construction project includes a whole
range of works for the entire facility – this is not just an ‘add on’ project of a new pool.”
Once the work is complete in June next year pool users will benefit from increased water space, improved water quality
and less chemicals used, increased fitness centre area, modernisation/refurbishment of the entire existing facility,
improved car parking, and a new competitive FINA compliant 25m pool – meaning swimming events can be held in it and
records can be set.
There will also be a new learn-to-swim pool, a new toddler splash pool, less noise as there will be acoustic separation
of individual pools, and a bigger and better relocated childcare facility which allows for an increase in the number of
children the creche is able to accept.
