Penny Sport Cycles Park to Pier Bike Ride Promises Family Fun on October 20th
Penny Sport Cycles Park to Pier Bike Ride, Sunday October 20th, 10am start in North Hagley Park (pre-race safety briefing at 9.45am) reaching New Brighton at approximately 12noon. FREE
Thousands of keen Cantabrians will be getting out-and-about on two wheels to enjoy the fresh air, and the safe cycling environment on October 20th.
The Penny Sport Cycles Park to Pier Bike Ride promises exercise and lots of fun on the 15km route, which winds it’s way from North Hagley Park, along the Avon River, and finishes at New Brighton Pier.
This year, cyclists will be utilizing the Hulverston Drive cycleway, which includes a cycle underpass in the Anzac Drive area. Before that, the Lite FM Drinks Stop in the Kerrs Reach area will be an opportunity to take a break and cool down before heading off to the finish line.
Over 2,000 riders are expected to take part in the event which attracts bikes of all sizes and shapes, from Penny Farthings and tandems, to new ergonomically and streamlined machines.
The relaxed, non-competitive ride will be a perfect opportunity to make use of one of Christchurch’s unique assets – our cycle-ways.
Cycle safety is of primary importance to the City Council Leisure team who, along with Penny Sport Cycles, make this fun summertime activity possible.
“We’ll have road marshals throughout the route” say Event Coordinator Gene O’Connell, “ and they will be there to help with any concerns cyclists have along the way, but of course, we ask that riders wear their reflective safety gear, and helmet. Fun is the essence of the day, and the idea is to come along with your family and enjoy yourself – but don’t forget to abide by the road rules!”
After 10.30am, entertainment with top dance band Puree will await participants at New Brighton. Food vendors and rides will also be operating.
While the ride itself is free to all, cyclists can register in advance for the prize draw and be in to win some fabulous prizes such as Eclipse Bikes From Penny Sport Cycles, a Hanmer Escape Package with the Heritage Hanmer and Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve, plus movie passes from Hoyts.
Prize registration forms will be available from October 1st at Penny Port Cycles, corner Tuam and Manchester Street, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices and at the reception of Lite FM on Kilmore Street. Forms are available on the day.
