Get Rid Of Hazardous Waste-Free

GET RID OF HAZARDOUS WASTE-FREE

Hutt City residents will have the opportunity to dispose of their Household Hazardous Waste for free this Saturday 21 September, at Suds Vehicle Wash, 42 Seaview Rd, from 10.00am till 2.00 pm.

"Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, garden chemicals, kitchen cleaners, in fact virtually any waste that is potentially dangerous to health or the environment can be bought along to the collection," said Hutt City Council's Solid Waste Officer Nicolette West.

The only hazardous wastes that will not be accepted are asbestos, medical waste, gas cylinders, ammunition or explosives.

"Household Hazardous Waste requires special treatment and disposal to protect people and the environment. We are urging people to take this opportunity to bring their hazardous waste along so that it can be disposed of in a responsible manner."

People should never attempt to dispose of hazardous waste by tipping it down drains.

"If this type of waste is tipped down the drain it could pollute our streams or damage our new wastewater treatment plant," says Council's Divisional Manager Wastewater Project Alan Bannatyne.

"Council recently spent $60 million on the new treatment plant so we want to protect it."
