WAIMAKARIRI RIVERBANKS TO BE SPRING CLEANED
Set this Saturday aside to help Clean Up The World. Volunteers are needed to help tidy up the banks of the Waimakariri
River – one of this year’s major Clean Up the World Week (September 16-22) activities in Canterbury.
This Saturday’s clean up will run from 9am until 3pm, with three river entrances - McLeans Island Rd, just past Isaac
Salmon Farm; Lorimas Rd, near Coutts Island; and on the northern side of the river, one kilometre upstream from the
jetboat ramp. Supervisors will be at each of the sites, handing out black bags, gloves and maps.
Anyone wanting to participate is invited to register with Dianne Parker, Reserves Ranger Environment Canterbury on 323
8751 to ensure that each of the clean-up zones is covered.
Keep Christchurch Beautiful co-ordinates local activities for the international Clean Up The World week, with the
support of other local community groups. Globally, the campaign mobilises millions of volunteers in more than 100
countries to tackle a wide range of environmental issues. First held in 1993, Clean Up The World aims to reduce the 650
billion tonnes of waste produced by the world’s cities each year. The long-term goal is to reduce waste by changing
attitudes and behaviour.
