Aerial spray operation finished for the day
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's targeted aerial spraying operation against the painted apple moth in west Auckland has finished for the day.
In calm conditions the plane and helicopter lifted off at first light this morning and completed most of the aerial spray zone before rising winds forced the operation to finish just before 10.00 am.
Completed areas include the Waikumete Cemetery, the seaward margins of the Avondale Peninsula and Waterview ;low lying land alongside the north-western motorway between the Lincoln Road and Point Chevalier/Waterview motorway ramps, including Traherne Island; vegetation along Henderson Creek and across to Central Park Drive, a small area at the bottom of the Te Atatu Peninsula; land on both sides of Huruhuru Creek in Massey West and Henderson, extending south through Swanson Rd and Universal Drive intersection to the railway line in Henderson, a small area between Malam St, Tahi Terrace and Rua Road Reserve in Glen Eden.
Areas yet to be completed include the seaward margins of Te Atatu, Glendene and Kelston.
A decision will be made at 4.30 am tomorrow morning whether spraying to finish the remaining areas will go ahead.
The entire aerial spray zone covers 900 hectares and around 4,000 properties.
