Mangere East Library to retain its name
The Mangere Community Board and the Community Development Committee of Manukau City Council have confirmed the retention of the name, Mangere East Library for the replacement library in Massey Road.
Council’s Libraries and Community Information planner, Dena Gilmore says that the purpose of the competition was to raise awareness of the new library and to encourage community participation in the project.
Five of the most interesting entries received prizes. Winners Margaret Shaw, Sarah M, P Pancha, BJ Palalagi and V Ulaula will be presented with a library gift package at the next Mangere Community Board meeting.
A workshop was then held to debate all suggestions for naming the new library, including other feedback from the community.
Mrs Gilmore says, “We are pleased that the local community feel strongly about their library and in particular its name. Of the total of 196 entries to the naming competition, 78 entries suggested the existing name ‘Mangere East Library’.
“The Community Board members had also received other requests that the name Mangere East Library be retained. Many long-time residents in the area are anxious to retain the name they are familiar with and that represents for them the history of this part of the City. So this is a great outcome for the library and for the community.
“We’re now looking forward to the official opening of the Mangere East Library on 16 November 2002.”
