North Shore City does its part to Clean Up New Zealand
North Shore City Council will work with residents, local community groups and organisations in the drive to Clean Up New Zealand.
The nation-wide Clean Up New Zealand Week takes place from September 16-22. Last year's event involved 180,000 New Zealanders in beach and river clean-ups, litter and graffiti removal, tree planting, adopting stretches of highway, environmental seminars and much more.
Works and environment committee chairperson, Joel Cayford, says the week of events is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to make a real difference.
"We can all play our part - whether it be individually or in a group - to help clean up and conserve our environment. It can be as simple as taking a bag with you while you> '> re enjoying our public places and picking up any rubbish you come across along the way," Councillor Cayford says.
The North Shore City Council is involved in numerous activities during Clean Up New Zealand Week, including:
* A shoreline clean up where council staff will cover the area from Takapuna to Mairangi Bay on the afternoon of Friday, September 20. * A litter clean up and planting in Witheford Scenic Reserve, co-ordinated by the Kaipatiki Ecological Restoration Project on Saturday, September 21. * A "Rubbish Bust" with WestpacTrust at Browns Bay from 10am-2pm on Saturday, September 21, with food, activities and family fun. * An eco-walk from Narrow Neck Beach to Takapuna Beach along the coast departing at 1pm on Sunday, September 22. People are invited to join in the clean up and learn about the coastal environment, history and geology of the area. There will also be children's activities and environmental displays.
People are also welcome to organise their own event with their local school, family, friends or colleagues.
North Shore City environmental education co-ordinator, Sarah Yarrow, says those wishing to take part should choose an area, stream or reserve they wish to clean up, organise a group and then register their activity.
"We can provide gloves, refuse and recycling bags and arrange for rubbish to be collected," she says.
Clean Up New Zealand is affiliated to the United Nations Environmental Programme and Clean Up the World campaign, aimed at changing attitudes and behaviour, and fostering programmes to reduce waste.
For more information on any of the above events or to register an event people can contact North Shore City Actionline on 486 8600 and ask to speak with Sarah Yarrow. People can also register events online at See... www.cleanupnz.org.nz .
