Have Passion for Panmure, Council says
Auckland City is to start its action plan for Panmure’s future with the help of the community.
Councillor Bill Christian, chairman of Auckland City Council’s Works Committee, says the action plan follows the recent adoption of the Panmure Liveable Community Plan.
The first phase of the action plan will start with three public meetings to involve the community in developing themes and concepts for an open space network and urban design plan for the town centre.
“Following extensive consultation with the community Council believes that working on action plans for parks and open spaces and a design for the town centre is the logical place to start,” says Councillor Christian.
“Working in partnership on design themes and concepts is an exciting process. We have been through a similar exercise in Glen Innes and found that the community really enjoyed working on the detail. We want the community to continue to work with Auckland City and be passionate about Panmure.”
Councillor Christian says the consultation process with the community to develop the Panmure Liveable Community Plan had taken three years to develop “ and now they want to see some action.”
The community will be involved with identifying projects and actions that improve the physical character of the Panmure town centre and the surrounding open spaces.
Community facilities, public open spaces (including Maungarei, Mt Wellington), parks, historic properties, the Tamaki estuary and Panmure lagoon, viewing points, pedestrian malls and linkages, streets and town squares will be examined for their potential improvement.
The public meetings may also discuss land used by the public but owned by Auckland City, which may be obtained or made available for public use, Councillor Christian says.
“Auckland City has a vision for Panmure that the community supports. We want an integrated and vibrant town centre. A desirable place to live, work, shop and conduct business.
“The vision supports the idea of building and supporting the local economy. We want to increase visitation to the town centre to create chances for local businesses to develop and create job opportunities.”
Councillor Christian says that the improvement of Panmure’s overall design and appearance will help create the opportunities needed for Panmure’s economy to grow.
“Successful town centres are located close to employment, transport routes and shops. Panmure is also very lucky to be surrounded by the physical beauty of a river, a mountain and a lagoon basin. These features can be developed for tourism.”
“No other area in Auckland has such natural advantages. Panmure should leverage its opportunities around its natural environment and its future will be assured.”
Panmure’s public meetings will be held at the Panmure Community Centre from 7-9pm.
