Muriwai open day to cover wide range of issues
Everything from gannets to beach access to stormwater disposal will be up for discussion at an open day at Muriwai this
Sunday.
The open day, from 10am to 4pm, will give people who love Muriwai the chance to tell councils how they believe their
regional park and their community should develop in the future.
Auckland Regional Council staff will be on hand to talk about the management of the 345-hectare Muriwai Regional Park
which stretches 10 km up the wild west coast.
ARC Parks and Heritage Committee Chairman Bill Burrill says that the ARC has initiated a review of park management and
design.
“Muriwai is a unique and beautiful place that caters for a whole range of activities including golf, 4WD beach access,
camping, surfing and exploring Otakamiro Point - the gannet colony.
“We are facing pressures such as closing carparks, shifting the surf club and coping with extreme beach erosion – issues
close to many people’s hearts. Now is your chance to help us get it right for the future”
The Rodney District Council will also be on hand, focusing on planning issues affecting the wider Muriwai community.
There will be information on how the growth of the community will be managed, including provision of a water supply and
sewage treatment. The District Council will also have information on community facilities and roading.
Muriwai's two new fire engines and a large display from the local surf lifesaving club will add pizzazz on the day.
Carter Holt Harvey will be there to answer questions about use and management of the Woodhill Forest.
Displays will be set up in marquees in front of the Regional Park headquarters, and representatives from all the
organisations will be there throughout the day from 10am to 4pm.
"The open day gives the two councils and other key players at Muriwai a chance to join forces for some meaningful
consultation with the community” Cr Burrill says.
The ARC has arranged the open day to give people the chance to discuss issues in the review of the Regional Parks
Management Plan.
People can make a submission on the spot, or take home a form and post it in before the closing date of Friday 4 October
2002.
