WaterCare Distraction On Waikato Water Quality

Published: Thu 27 Jun 2002 02:20 PM
WaterCare Services appears to have stupefied people to think of Waikato River Water is safe to drink. Inland Water Services tell us that at the lower part of the river the water surely contains most contaminants. Hamilton and Cambridge communities take the water from the upper part of Waikato River whilst WaterCare will draw the water from the lower part of Waikato River and at the highest point of contamination, which is about 500 metres below the giga-rubbish-dump at Hampton Downs.
Waikato region has more than 16,000 km of rivers and streams. This implies that millions of impurities, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and contaminants leached from many uncontrolled sources such as farmlands, forests, industries, and sewage from communities lying in a vast area starting from Lake Taupo to Hampton Downs. All these effluents flow into the natural waterway, the Waikato River.
WaterCare mentioned that the hole-diameter of the most sophisticated filter is several microns, which is still a thousand times larger than the diameter of all inorganic soluble chemicals. In a public consultation meeting held in Mt. Roskill Flickling Centre, the writer questioned an officer on whether the high-tech sophisticated filter could remove the salt in seawater and turned it into fresh water, he replied that this question was too technical, he could not answer. WaterCare informed us that there would be a very large plastic sheet beneath the Hampton Downs rubbish dump to prevent poisonous water leaching into the river.
WaterCare, which would manage the rubbish-dump, could remove all the toxic chemicals in the rubbish-dump water by tanker trucks to Mangere Sewage Plant for treatment. If this polluted water transfer could be done, then in similar situation those tankers could carry away all flood water in Auckland City! WaterCare could not answer question from an elderly lady, who questioned how to handle the poisons that leach from the dump to Waikato River if the plastic sheet fails after the thirty years of life expectancy. The elderly lady finally concluded that she then understood what was democracy and what was public consultation in New Zealand.
Our organs are the most sophisticated organic filter or absorber of most chemicals. We would like WaterCare not to pump Waikato water to Auckland until
1.. The Auckland Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Virginia Hope, should release all her medical findings and information of all water impurities such that all Aucklanders can understand the risk of whether their bodies can be impaired by the intake of contaminants from the Waikato River Water after a prolonged period of consumption. 2.. WaterCare should provide sample of the high-tech sophisticated filter for direct laboratory tests on its filtering capacity and capability. Aotearoa Waka would like to demonstrate those tests publicly so all water consumers can make an informed decision as to whether the filter could stop all chemicals and toxins.
The statement that 'Waikato River provides a secure, sustainable source of safe drinking water' is nonsense. The riverhead of Waikato River starts from the volcanic crater, Lake Taupo. We understand that a volcanic activity is a result of natural geo-nuclear energy released at the core of Mother Earth. Huge amounts of chemicals would be produced, then brought up to the earth surface by the magna convection current and dissolved in the crater lake water. Please note that there is no control to stop any pollutants from the vast collection area along Waikato River.
All readers should be aware of the adverse health consequence of accumulation or integration of contaminants in your bodies. "Radithor certified radioactive water contains radium and mesothorium in Triple Distilled Water was sold as a universal cure - until in 1932. A businessman in Pittsburg died a lingering death after drinking the contents of many bottles of this water. The manufacturer of this water had to flee the country and along with other makers ." an extract from Nat Phil, written by Jim Jardine, 1973, Heineman, London.
The WaterCare decision to take Waikato River Water is wrong. The four-stage ultra-filtration treatment will definitely not ensure a pure and safe drinking water. The typical ultrafiltration screening range is between a molecular weight between 2000 to 5000, this will not filter out toxins and chemicals that are harmful to life.
Seawater and stormwater can be used as a substitution for 26% of Auckland's drinking water, this is the best secondary water source which can cater to the growing drinking water demand. This was a recommendation by the writer to Waitakere Council. We are against the construction of Waikato Pipe Line, we would rather support the building of a dam by the council in Waitakere to hold rainwater.
Auckland region should adopt the seawater and stormwater for sanitary flushing, road washing and if necessary fire fighting. Alternate water supply system works successfully to meet all future non-drinking water demands, greatly minimise the demand of drinking water and reduce the cost of water in all coastal cities. An example is the city of Hong Kong, a city which now has a population of seven and a half million people.
The reader should now understand the Parliamentary assignment to LATE, like WaterCare. WaterCare is directed to be a business unit, which is to make substantial profits out of commercialised public water services with no regard to our public health. This very situation has been played out in the UK, where the public suffered the consequences of a privatised water supply.
