Opportunities for Young Dragsters
At Car Clubs
MotorSport New Zealand has already offered its services to the Auckland City Council which is trying to develop
initiatives to manage the “boy racer” problem in the city, president Steven Kennedy said today. “We will work with any
council or the NZ Police if they feel we can assist with finding a satisfactory solution to the problem.
“The two car so-called drag racing is similar to the sprint events undertaken at car clubs around the country in
safe facilities that don’t inconvenience the public.
“Some of our permanent circuits already have donut pads where young drivers can go and smoke up their tyres.
“What they are doing on the streets will result in more tears unless the problem is brought under control.
Almost all motorsport has an element of risk and danger. A fundamental part of MotorSport New Zealand’s activity is
ensuring the safety of competitors and spectators.
“Our member clubs have suitable facilities in many centres where these young drivers can test themselves in a
controlled environment. There are active car clubs in almost every town in New Zealand and young people are more than
welcome,” Mr Kennedy said.
“In some centres, car club members have been active in arranging suitable venues for burnouts if there is not
something available at a nearby circuit.”
