Pt Chevalier Community Library will close for major refurbishment on Wednesday, May 15, reopening on Thursday, May 30.
Auckland City is carrying out a major redevelopment of the library with the Barry Donovan room being integrated into the
main library area to provide extra floor space. Owairaka libraries manager Donna Gibbs says the library has had an
increasing need for floor space.
“Over the years new collections and services such as internet access have been introduced. It is the library’s intention
to fully utilise floor space to meet community needs,” she says.
There will be additional browsing areas as well as a study area, a new public toilet, and an alternative meeting room
for community and library use.
The library will also be refurbished with new carpet, paint, shelving, lighting and additional air conditioning, all
creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for customers.
The original Pt Chevalier library opened in 1926 and transferred to a nearby public hall in 1936. By 1943, it was the
busiest of Auckland City’s branch libraries. In 1986, today’s architecturally designed building was built on the
original site.
The library will be closed for both the borrowing and return of books, and customers are invited to use nearby
alternative libraries. These include Avondale Community Library, 93 Rosebank Road; Grey Lynn Community Library, 474
Great North Road; Mt Albert Community Library, 84 St Lukes Rd (adjacent to St Lukes shopping centre).
