The Auckland City Council has chosen an Australian company, Abigroup Ltd, as the preferred developer of an indoor arena
in the city’s downtown area.
The decision came down to three short-listed proposals to develop a sports and entertainment venue at Quay Park.
According to Events and Recreation committee chairperson, Scott Milne, Abigroup’s success at providing the most
comprehensive and imaginative package, resulted in their selection as preferred developers.
“We are absolutely thrilled at the selection. Abigroup have a proven record and there is no doubt if we can
satisfactorily negotiate with them, we will get the best multi-purpose arena built for the council’s $50 million
investment - at minimum cost and risk to ratepayers,” says Councillor Milne.
Negotiations will be based on Abigroup’s owning and operating the arena for a period of 20 to 30 years, after which
ownership will revert to the council.
Abigroup Ltd an Australian project development company, manages the Sydney Superdrome and proposes to market the
“Auckland Superdrome” in conjunction with Sydney, as a way to attract international events to both venues.
“An indoor arena at Quay Park will mean Aucklanders can enjoy more sporting events, more entertainment with
top-of-the-line acoustics and won’t have to be dictated to by the weather,” says Councillor Milne.
