Volvo Ocean Race Prizegiving at the Sky City Starlight Symphony
Auckland bids farewell to the Volvo Ocean Race yachts this weekend as they head off on the fourth leg of their nine-leg
round-the-world race.
On Saturday (January 26) the Sky City Starlight Symphony will double as the official Volvo Ocean Race prizegiving.
Earlier this month Assa Abloy led the eight-boat fleet into Auckland to win leg three from Capetown. She was followed
closely by Amer Sports One and Tyco.
The Sky City Starlight Symphony begins at 6pm at the Domain and is expected to attract tens of thousands of Aucklanders
for a celebration of popular symphonic and contemporary entertainment and to farewell the Volvo Ocean Race crews.
Aucklanders turned out in their thousands to support the Volvo Ocean Race during the three-and-a-half-week stopover in
the Viaduct Harbour. The festivities began with the arrival concert on January 5 and has continued with a range of
activities and celebrations that have brought the Viaduct Harbour alive.
The boats leave on Sunday morning on the 6700-mile leg to Rio de Janeiro. The action will be shown live on the big
screen at the Viaduct from 10am.
