“Cheap, Safe And Easy: Buses And Trains To The Big Day Out, Night Rider To Take You Home”

The Big Day Out 2002 on Friday 18 January will be attended by in excess of 20,000 young people, attracted by more than
60 bands set to rock the stadium, including Prodigy, Crystal Method, New Order, NOFX, Garbage, Gerling, Shihad,
Grinspoon, Regurgitator, Magic Dirt and Superheist.
Stagecoach and Tranz Metro are running special buses and trains to the stadium.
“The safe, cost effective and convenient alternative to driving to the stadium is to go by public transport. The
addition of special services and fares for the Big Day Out, is welcomed by organisers and concert-goers alike” said
Passenger Transport Committee Chairwoman, ARC Councillor Catherine Harland.
“The Big Day Out is a major event for youth in Auckland. The ARC has been working with transport operators and concert
promoters to ensure young people can get to and from the stadium easily and, most importantly, safely.”
Tranz Metro have trains running throughout the day every 30 minutes to Penrose Station, which is only five minutes walk
from the stadium. After the event from 10pm through until 12.30am, extra trains have been scheduled to depart from
Penrose Station every 15 minutes for Waitakere, Papakura and Glen Innes/Orakei, stopping at all stations.
Tranz Metro is offering special fares of $10 for a return ticket or $7 for a ride home after the event. Tickets are
available from any train on the Waitakere, Glen Innes, Papakura or Manukau lines.
Stagecoach is offering a special $5 fare each way for buses which depart from two CBD locations - 450 Queen Street (Real
Groovy Records) and Lower Albert Street (outside the Air New Zealand Building). They will leave from 9.30am, with
departures running all day until 6pm. Return buses from the stadium commence at 10.30pm and run until 11.45pm. They will
travel to the St James Theatre, Queen Street to link with the Night Rider buses which leave this area at 1am, 2am and
3am and travel along 16 routes across Auckland.
“The weekend Night Rider services have been extremely popular with the youth of Auckland and returning the Big Day Out
buses to their central departure point will help ensure that concert-goers have an affordable means of travelling home
across Auckland,” said Cr Harland.
