Britomart Construction Restricts Quay St Through Traffic
Motorists wanting to get from Customs St to Quay St who previously “ducked through” Commerce St and Britomart Place, now
have to take a more roundabout route.
Construction of the Britomart project has forced the closure of Britomart Place and the part of Commerce St which runs
behind the old Central Post Office between Customs and Quay streets. Neither vehicles nor pedestrians can use Britomart
Place or Commerce St to get between Quay and Customs streets.
Vehicles travelling west on Customs St which previously accessed Quay St from Commerce St will now have to go up to
Albert St and turn right.
And motorists travelling east on Customs St towards the Railway Station will have to go one block beyond the now-closed
Britomart Place to Tangihua St, which was previously an extension of Tinley St.
Pedestrians can use Queen Elizabeth Square to move between Quay and Customs streets.
Vehicle access from Customs St into Galway St, via Commerce St, is still possible for those needing to access the
Mercure (formerly Novotel) Hotel. Likewise, there is still vehicle access into Tyler St from Quay St, via Queen
Elizabeth Square. Pedestrians can continue to use Galway and Tyler streets.
Auckland City says the road closures are necessary to enable the underground station to be built. The roads will be
re-opened once the station is completed in mid-2003.
