Auckland legislation good for the city
Auckland City Mayor Chris Fletcher says the enactment of three Auckland bills sponsored by the Hon Judith Tizard are
common-sense measures allowing better use of resources.
“These are important pieces of legislation that will create opportunities, reduce bureaucracy and enable a number of
matters to be managed in a more business-like manner,” says Chris Fletcher.
“The new legislation provides practical measures to solve some long-standing anomalies and also give the city the
ability to take sensible commercial decisions,” she said.
In particular, the new legislation meant the Aotea Centre Board of Management could now manage other facilities and
venues owned by the council. This allowed for improved coordination of venues and was good business sense.
Chris Fletcher said the Auckland Improvement Trust bill provided new opportunities for a tourism attraction by allowing
development of the historic air-raid tunnels under Albert Park.
“This legislation demonstrates how central and local government can work in partnership to resolve specific issues in an
efficient and effective way.
