Auckland is the weed capital of New Zealand, and it is time for householders to make war against weed pests. Weeds like tobacco weed, moth plant, and jasmine are too widespread for any agency to control. Native species are struggling and the city bird population remains low.
Now it is up to individual homeowners and tenants to make an effort for their local environment to identify and remove major plant pests from their back yards.
Regional Council officers have produced excellent booklets on identifying plant pests, plus `Friendly Alternatives’ for people who are interested in replacing plant pests with native bird-friendly species. Call Enviroline on 0800 80 60 40, and talk to your neighbours about working together.
