Local training solves transport problem
A Russell-based course in hospitality
Enterprise Russell has solved the difficulty for people who want to upskill in the hospitality industry that live on the ‘other side’ of the ferry; they’ve brought an NZQA-accredited course to Russell!
In the summer local employers are always looking for people with the necessary skills to cope with the boom in the tourism industry, preferring staff that can complement the high standards of cuisine and hospitality for which Romantic Russell has become famous.
“We teamed up with a local training provider and asked them if they’d run a course over the second half of the year in Russell,” Jacqui Knight, CEO of Enterprise Russell said. “And Planet Career Training of Kaikohe has agreed to shift their course to our venue.”
The course is suitable for young people not making progress in the secondary school system or people returning to the workforce. The course includes certificates in wine and coffee, a corporate hotel experience in Auckland and visit to the National Hospitality Show as well as three weeks’ work experience which will be completed in the Russell area.
“The employers are already inquiring about the students,” Jacqui continued. “Graduation will be just before the busy season, so the students will be much in demand.”
Students can apply for assistance with the course fees. Further information can be obtained from Enterprise Russell, Work and Income NZ or Planet Career Training.”
