Council Extends Submission Date For Green Edge Project
Christchurch City Council has deferred the closing date for submissions on the Estuary Green Edge project. Due to the
extension of the wastewater consenting process and public demand for a longer consultation period, the Green Edge
deadline will now be extended from 20 July 2001 until early next year.
This will give interested parties more time to consider the Council’s draft plan for the development of an ecological
and recreational margin along the western edge of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.
“The Estuary is considered one of Christchurch’s most precious environmental assets,” says project leader, Stu McHugh.
“It is fundamental that the Green Edge Proposal reflects the community’s interests and aspirations for the Estuary, and
that the draft receives the considered attention and discussion it deserves. We will continue to liaise with key
stakeholders and interest groups on a more informal basis during the interim, and welcome any preliminary feedback the
public may have.”
Although some of the changes imposed on the Estuary in the past are irreversible, the proposed Green Edge aims to
restore and protect remaining habitats and to create new ones, for use by wildlife, as well as Christchurch residents
and visitors. Over the next 15 years, the natural environment of Linwood Paddocks, the oxidation ponds and Bexley
Reserve would be enhanced to link to a wider Green Corridor that extends from Brooklands Lagoon to the Port Hills.
