Pukaki worm farm will be having an open day on Monday June 12th from 10am – 2pm to celebrate World Environment Day’s
theme ‘the world wide web of life”.
Visitors will be able to learn the ins and outs of worm farming – a cost efficient and environmentally sustainable way
to dispose of waste. At the same time people can learn how to use the worm casting to grow organic fruit and vegetables.
Eco-education Permaculturist Daniel Nepia will be hosting the day with Linda Lee, kaitiaki of Wastewise Trust, which
operates out of Pukaki worm farm. Linda says learning about worm farming is an ideal way for unemployed people to gain
work experience and lift their own sense of achievement. People can sign up for Daniel's workshops on Small Space
Design, No Dig Gardens, Spray Free Food, Composting and Worm Farms.
“It’s about coming back to papatuanuku, working with her, learning about the land, enjoying being active and taking
pride in their accomplishments,” says Ms Lee.
Wastewise Trust was designed to inspire and invoke the ‘magic’ of wormaculture. Manukau City Council has supported
Pukaki worm farm as part of its waste minimisation strategy. The Council gave $60,000 from the community waste
initiative fund to ensure the worm farm had adequate education facilities, resources and public conveniences.
“We are getting more and more visitors all the time. Schools bus loads arrive and the kids love it. But in the past we
haven’t had the facilities to cope with so many people coming through. With the support and in association with the
tangata whenua Te-Wai-O-Hua the worm farm and Trust has been able to share the magic of this unique site.” says Ms Lee.
Anyone interested in developing a worm farm or attending the open day workshops, can contact the Wastewise Trust on
