Community groups running arts programmes and activities in Hutt City will receive Creative Communities grant cheques from Mayor John Terris at a presentation evening on Wednesday 23 May 2001. This will be held at the Hutt Art Society rooms, cnr Myrtle and Huia Streets, Lower Hutt, commencing at 6:00pm. The evening will include performances and presentations/displays from groups who have received funding from this scheme in the past.
The Community Grants Committee of the Hutt City Council meet twice a year to consider applications from community groups for funding for locally based arts and cultural projects. At its latest meeting in early May the Committee awarded $18,600 to arts and cultural projects in Hutt City. These ranged from junior art and craft workshops, drama and play writing workshops, to sound equipment for two groups and contemporary carving & painting at a local Marae. Included in the funding provided was a further $1,580.00 for the City's two community arts councils, Te Awakairangi Community Arts Council and Hutt Valley Community Arts Inc. This funding allows these councils to distribute small grants and seeding funding on a monthly basis of up to $500 for arts and cultural projects in the city.
Community Development's Funding Officer, Caroline O'Loan, says "the scheme aims to increase participation in the arts at the local level, increase the range and diversity of arts available to communities, and enhance and strengthen the local arts and cultural sectors. The fund is a great way to assist groups and individuals to show what a vibrant art s and cultural community exists in the Hutt."
Applications for the next round of funding will be called for again in September 2001.
