“HazMobile comes to Auckland City”
February 26, 2001
After proving a big success in North Shore City, Franklin and Papakura the HazMobile will make its debut in Auckland
City this weekend.
The HazMobile is a mobile household hazardous waste collection developed by the ARC in conjunction with other Auckland
local bodies. It is a free service designed to ensure the recycling or safe disposal of household hazardous waste while
saving householders a trip to a transfer station.
ARC Environmental Management Committee chairperson Patricia Thorp says indications from the trials at five sites in
Franklin, Papakura and North Shore are that the HazMobile is a big hit with the public and is helping raise awareness of
hazardous waste issues.
A total of 1445 householders attended the trials, dropping off 35.3 tonnes of waste, including 15.1 tonnes of paint, 9.6
tonnes of waste oil, 5.8 tonnes of car batteries, 3.5 tonnes of household chemicals and 1.3 tonnes of garden chemicals.
“The safe disposal of these items is important for the environment and so far householders have responded well to the
fact that we are making this convenient for them,” Cr Thorp says.
“I’m sure the Auckland City public will be equally keen to take advantage of the service.”
After being collected by the HazMobile, household hazardous wastes are passed on to companies which can recycle them or
neutralise them for safe disposal.
