Manukau City Council’s trial of a monitored street camera at Hunters Corner, Papatoetoe will begin this week.
Council recently approved a six month trial of closed circuit television beginning on 23rd February with the aim of
reducing public disorder in the area.
Swiftlink Security has been contracted to monitor the camera which will cover Great South Road, Hoteo Ave and Sutton
Crescent. Swiftlink will liaise directly with the Police should any public disorder incidents occur.
Signs have been placed in the area informing people of the existence of the camera. The Local Business Association is
fully supportive of Council's initiative and will be kept informed on the trial’s progress and results.
Councillor Noel Burnside is extremely pleased that the trial is moving ahead. “Soliciting at Hunters Corner has been a
long standing issue causing noise and offensive behaviour problems for local residents and businesses. Over the past
year Councillors and staff have been working with the NZ Police and other agencies to look at how the problems might be
addressed. The ability of these cameras to instantaneously identify persons and vehicles should have a profound impact
on unsociable activities” he said.
“If the trial is as successful as we believe it will be, Council will investigate using the cameras in other trouble
spots throughout the city.”
