New Plans for Parnell Baths on View
Plans outlining the proposed redevelopment of the Parnell Baths are now available for viewing.
The redevelopment aims to provide improved recreational facilities that will increase the appeal of the Baths for
families and children and to bring the asset up to the standard expected of public pools.
The proposal involves dividing the main pool into two separate areas – a lane pool and a partially heated lido/fun pool
featuring water toys. A large spa pool, children’s hot pool, toddlers’ pool, sauna and steam rooms will also be added.
Major improvements to the water treatment systems, including new pipework and new plant and equipment are also planned.
The changing rooms, buildings and the historic mural will undergo major refurbishment to bring them up to current
standards. The kiosk building will be upgraded and expanded to include café seating.
The Parnell Baths are a designated heritage site and have been in operation for more than 85 years. They have undergone
alterations and additions over the years, of which the most significant was the construction of the changing rooms in
1956. Little maintenance has been undertaken since then so, with the wear and tear caused over the years, the Baths are
in need of a major upgrade. In addition, discharges and leaks from the facility to the surrounding Judges Bay will also
be addressed as part of the redevelopment.
Hunt Davies Architects have been contracted to design the modifications to the swimming pool; Matthews and Matthews
Architects will design the renovations to the buildings and heritage aspects of the site; and Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd are undertaking the engineering work and resource consent application for the proposed development.
The plans for the Baths can be viewed in the foyer of the Parnell Baths until February 23. They are also on display on
the third floor of the Civic Building, 1 Greys Avenue and opportunity is available at both venues to make comments on
the plans.
