An Emergency Meeting of Council was held on Tuesday 30 January 2001 to award the contract for works on Turanga Hill – a
well-known black spot in the Whitford area.
Council has awarded the Turanga Hill Safety Improvements project to HEB Contractors Ltd. The work is intended to improve
road safety in this section of the Whitford-Maraetai Road by providing increased crossfall and consistent grading on the
corners together with an 800m passing lane for eastbound traffic.
A number of road accidents have occurred in the area, including five fatalities in the last five years. Director of
Environmental Management, Leigh Auton, says the works are aimed at eliminating these statistics.
“The emergency meeting was held because Council and the Clevedon Community Board didn’t want to delay the project any
further particularly as safety is paramount to all of us. This issue was deemed too important to wait a further two
weeks for the next Environmental Management Committee,” says Mr Auton.
Property owners in the vicinity have been advised of the project and those affected by the works have given their
consent. Resource consent for the work has also been obtained.
The construction period will take approximately ten weeks commencing early February.
